The Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple of UK is located in Dagenham, Essex and is part of the Nichiren School of Buddhism (Nichiren Shū 日蓮宗) . The Temple was established on 12th October 1997, and the current Head Priest is the Rev. Kanto Tsukamoto.
Nichiren Shū is a Japanese Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. It was founded by Nichiren Shonin, a Buddhist monk born in Japan in the 13th Century.
The Head Temple of Nichiren Shū is Kuon-ji Temple, which is situated on Mt. Minobu in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.
We exist to promote and support the practice of Nichiren Shū Buddhism within the UK and Europe, which can enrich people's lives, and bring, peace, happiness, wisdom and compassion.
By practising and studying the Buddha's teachings, and the Lotus Sutra in particular, and practising the methods Nichiren Shōnin revealed, we believe people can develop wisdom and compassion, be happy, at peace, and positively contribute to society.

Having spent the first part of his life as a professional mountain climber summiting major peaks in the Himalayas and elsewhere, Tsukamoto Shonin later made the decision to become a Nichiren Shu Priest, working for Nichiren Shu Head Office (Shumuin) in Ikegami before going to the Los Angeles Minobusan Beikoku Betsuin in 1995 to train as a Kaikyoshi (Overseas Missionary Priest). Following his stay in Los Angeles he moved to Canada in March 1996, becoming the 8th Head Priest of the Toronto Nichiren Buddhist Church, and in 2007 he transferred to the UK to become the 6th Head Priest of the Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple of UK.
A remarkable Buddhist teacher, he is known for his keen insight, his emphasis on a practical approach to the Dharma and his ability to share profound teachings in a direct way through the use of simple, easy-to-grasp explanations.

Born in Surrey, Capon Shonin started practising Nichiren Buddhism when he was 16 years old.
After practising at the temple for seven years as a lay person, during which time he also did a Masters Degree in Religion at SOAS focusing on Japanese Religion and Buddhist Studies, he asked Tsukamoto Shonin to accept him as a disciple and officially become his master in 2014. He had the Shukke Tokudo (Leaving Home) ceremony in February 2014, and travelled to Seichoji Temple in Chiba Prefecture, Japan to become officially registered as a Nichiren Shu Shami (Novice Priest) in April 2015.
During his time as a Shami he travelled to Japan many times to train and to visit important pilgrimage sites. He also took part in Shami Seminars at the Nichiren Buddhist International Center (NBIC) in the USA, and at Renkoji Temple in Italy. In 2018 he walked more than 300 miles from Penzance to the temple in Dagenham, beating a drum and chanting the Odaimoku to pray for the happiness of everyone he encountered and spread the Dharma. He attended the Shingyo Dojo monastic retreat on Mt. Minobu, Japan, in late 2023, upon completion of which he received full ordination as a Nichiren Shu Priest.
He currently looks after the day-to-day running of the UK temple, supporting believers in the UK and other parts of Europe, and is actively engaged in the propagation of Nichiren Shu Buddhism.
Our temple relies on your support and contributions to survive. Your contributions enable us to meet the costs of running the temple, run activities and make teachings available. All donations are very gratefully received. Thank you.
